It was Baron Walter von Richthofen who promoted this area as Denver's finest residential suburb in the 19th century. The homes built at that time were a collection of buildings designed and constructed with unenclosed side porches so that Colorado's clean air could ease residents' chronic tuberculosis. To demonstrate the wonderful quality of life here, the Baron decided to build a castle of his own at 12th and Olive. To further promote the Montclair real estate market as not only a healthy place to live, but also as a prestigious neighborhood, strict building requirements were put in place, including the use of only brick or stone, planning for a minimum of two stories, and building on double size lots (twice the size of the earlier 25' x 125' lots).
