PorchLight Agents Help McAuliffe With “Clean Sweep”

Recycling Event Raises Funds for New Basketball Backboards for Park Hill Middle School

DENVER, CO :: January 12, 2016—A recycling event organized by a team of PorchLight Real Estate Group agents, has raised more than $5,000 for McAuliffe International School, enabling them to purchase new backboards for their basketball courts. The program, called “Clean Sweep,” was originally devised and spearheaded by Gerwin Group agents Mary Gerwin and Shaylisa Turner, and occurred last fall on the grounds of McAuliffe.

The 2nd Annual Clean Sweep event on October 17th, was a program offering paper shredding, electronics recycling, and safe paint disposal in exchange for voluntary donations. This year’s event saw more than 550 cars drop off 8,500 pounds of paper, three truckloads of electronics and two truckloads of paint. In total, Clean Sweep raised $5,010 for McAuliffe International Middle School. In addition to Gerwin and Turner, the effort was hosted by PorchLight agents Joe Chang, Lisa Chabot, Pam Fales and Tammy Morran.

“We came up with the idea of Clean Sweep in 2014, as a way to both offer an incredibly useful service to our clients, friends, and community; and give back to an amazing school that serves that community,” said Mary Gerwin. “The response we saw this year has blown us away, and seeing the new backboards and the happy faces of McAuliffe players makes it all the better.”

McAuliffe International is an authorized IB World School for 6th through 8th graders in the Stapleton/Park Hill shared middle school boundary. The school is located on the historic Smiley campus at 2540 Holly Street. It’s known for its rigorous and holistic approach to education, and has been recognized by the Denver Public Schools Board of Education with innovation status. In addition to academics, students are encouraged to participate in a wide range of cultural and athletic extracurriculars.

“Mary and Shaylisa have been supporting McAuliffe for a few years now and, to date, have raised approximately $10,000 to support the school,” says McAuliffe Community Liaison Cindy Eastman. “This year we wanted to upgrade our basketball hoops to support our robust athletic department, and—through their tremendous commitment to the Park Hill community—we raised over $5,000! We cleaned up the environment and supported some very enthusiastic basketball players at the same time.”

Gerwin, Turner and additional PorchLight agents plan to once again offer the Clean Sweep program in the fall of 2016.
