Welcome to Auraria
Auraria is the oldest neighborhood in Denver. Originally settled as a small mining town, Auraria in fact predates Denver, the city, itself. Today the neighborhood—nestled between Colfax Avenue and the banks of Cherry Creek and the South Platte River—is dominated by the Auraria Campus, and serves as the city’s hub for higher learning.
Just across Speer Boulevard from downtown, the Auraria Campus is home to three colleges and universities—University of Colorado Denver, Metropolitan University of Denver, and Community College of Denver. The schools largely serve commuter students who are attracted to both the convenience of campus and growing academic reputations of the institutions.
Along with the campus, the neighborhood is home to large attractions including the Pepsi center (where both the Colorado Avalanche hockey and Denver Nuggets basketball teams play), and the popular amusement park Elitch Gardens. Few residences can be found within the neighborhood itself, but those lucky enough to live in or near Auraria, enjoy modern conveniences in the heart of the city’s original home.
