Montclair, CO

On the eastern border of central Denver, the Montclair neighborhood lies between Colfax, 6th Avenue, Quebec, and Holly. Baron Water von Richthofen promoted this area as Denver’s finest residential suburb in the 19th century; it was a collection of homes designed and constructed with unenclosed side porches so Colorado’s clear air could ease residents’ chronic tuberculosis. To demonstrate the wonderful quality of Montclair, the Baron built a castle of his own at 12th Avenue and Olive. To promote the neighborhood as a prestigious place to live (in addition to a healthy place to live), strict building requirements were put in place, including the use of only brick or stone, planning for a minimum of two stories, and building on double size lots (twice the size of the typical 25’x125’ lots).

In 1975, the area bounded by 7th and 12th Avenues, from Newport to Pontiac, was designated as a historic district. Today, with its a beautiful mix of bungalows, classic cottages, Tudor Revivals, and ranch-style homes, this hilly, upscale neighborhood is still a model community with a spectacular view and sophisticated architecture.

Residents enjoy Downtown Denver's proximity, a pristine reputation, and the idyllic and convenient Monaco Parkway that runs through its center. Along Colfax, pharmacies, retail, dry cleaners, salons, and supermarkets make errands easy.
